The Final Test (最後の課題, Saigo no Kadai) is the ninth episode of the Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout anime series.

Summary

At the hideout, Klaudia plays her flute in front of Ryza, who was impressed by her performance. Moments after this, Empel and Lila enter the place, review a map of the area, and contemplate where to continue their search for ruins.

The following day, Ryza, Lent, and Tao go on an adventure on the island and defeat a few Rock Monsters. One of which dropped the material, Pentanite, that Ryza instantly took for herself.

Riding on a boat that afternoon, the group talked about how successful their adventure was and about Ryza's modified staff. Upon reaching the shore, Klaudia informs Ryza that her father will issue his final test the next day. The test centers around an adventure competition against Bos, which Ryza confidently welcomes the challenge.

On the day of the challenge, Lubart accompanied by Agatha, an unnamed soldier, Bos, and Lumbar. The challenge was a race on the highway between the two sides; whoever returned the fastest while dealing with these challenges would be the winner. Although Bos boasted about showing his superiority toward Ryza's group, he was upset that Agatha had assigned a guardian to help them. Despite Bos' group leaving first, Agatha mentions that they'll be timed on who completes the race the fastest, not first. Pleased to hear that, Ryza's group waits a while for Bos' group to proceed, noting his group can handle the monsters.

Eventually, Ryza's group heads out, and they find a couple of Green Puni and are surprised that Bos' side didn't defeat them. So, they run past the monsters and reach the Highway Ruin. There, they rescue a merchant from a monster and get his wagon unstuck in the ground. They're rewarded with donuts, and when they sit down to take a break, a monster steals Ryza's donut. While Ryza chases after it, Tao and Lent nearly follow, but mid-way, Tao locates some ancient runic text that reads, "Resting Branch for the Winged". Lent then notices the claw marks around the wall by the text.

Afterward, Ryza's group runs into Bos', who looks rather rugged, and after a brief rebuke from Bos' group, Ryza's group heads to the Hut, where the next message was. Tao translated it as "Travelers heading south must never leave the highway." The verse is recalled to be part of a nursery rhyme they've heard from their village. The rest of the nursery rhyme mentions a dragon at a ruined castle left over from the fallen Klint Kingdom.

Around dusk, Ryza's group headed home and back to the ruined area, where they found the text about a resting branch. There, they find Bos' group unconscious on the ground, and a Red Dragon appears before them and attacks. Ryza then attacks it with some Unbeatable Bombs, and one of them is deflected by the Dragon, which causes some rubble to fall on top of and break the runic text. The incident makes the Dragon regain its composure and fly away, allowing Ryza's group to rescue Bos.

Returning to the island, Ryza informs Agatha and Lubart about what had happened. Later, Klaudia and Ryza have a heart-to-heart about Ryza's relationship with Bos when they were kids and how things were different back then. They're then approached by Agatha and Lubart, who report that Bos and his companions sustained minor bruises and light burns. Though Ryza passed Lubart's test, Ryza couldn't venture out until the Dragon had been dealt with.

The next day, Ryza and Klaudia talk with Romy and Fressher about how the Dragon could interfere with the village getting supplies into the village. To make matters worse, one of the village elders opined his disdain for the outsiders coming into the village to the residents.

Sometime later, Ryza's group talks to Lila and Empel at the hideout, where Lent learns his sword is far too dull to fight against the Dragon. Ryza also informs Empel about her plans to improve her bomb recipe using Smokey Charcoal, Magma Powder, and Red Supplement. Empel was impressed with the ingredients, but couldn't confirm if they'd be enough to create a bomb strong enough to win against the Dragon. Tao then mentions the text that was found there and after it attracted the Dragon and caused it to disappear when it broke. Empel believes it could have been a summoning device like one used in the Flint Castle. It's also believed that a monster they fought before could be linked to it, and in light of this, Lila and Empel decide to investigate the situation together.
