"This nation has a job called 'adventurers.' It all happened before Arland became a republic. People wanted to explore, adventure, or develop the frontier. The knights of Arland were weak, so the citizens joined them and helped out. It happened gradually, but that system was later institutionalized. Adventuring is now a real job. My mother was one of those adventurers."
          — From the manual of Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland

Adventurer is a job available to individuals within the Arland Republic. The adventurer system was created both to help with monsters plaguing the lands of Arland and also fulfilling various requests. Adventurers also expected to explore and map new lands, replacing the previous messy maps that proved problematic.

In the early days, the adventurer system was largely unregulated. Anyone could become an adventurer and the lack of regulations regarding conduct led to a general disregard for the system. Despite this, a number of adventurers nevertheless managed to provide at least some help to the Arland Republic.

Atelier Totori

Adventuring is most prominent in Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland.

Totor's mother Gisela Helmold, is one of the greatest adventurers known throughout the Arland Republic. This inspires Totori to also get her license, which will help her find her mother, who went missing several years ago.

At the time that Totori and her friend Gino first seek their Adventurer's License, the process for becoming an Adventurer is undergoing a major renovation. Adventurers are no longer immediately granted a lifetime license, but are instead initially granted a provisional license with the option to renew their license after a specific period of time if they meet the requirements. They are granted License Points for each task they fulfill, and can increase their Adventurer Rank after gaining a certain amount of points. Cordelia von Feuerbach has been placed in charge of overseeing the process, with Filly Dee handling requests, taking over from her sister Esty.

At the end of Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland, Totori is granted her permanent Adventurer's License providing she meets the requirements, and is left to contemplate her future.

Atelier Meruru

No mention is made in Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland of Princess Meruru possessing or needing an Adventurer's License. It is possible that as Arls is not yet part of the Arland Republic, it is exempt from these rules, alternatively, Meruru's status as nobility might grant her an exemption.

  • Throughout the series, the term "Adventurer Level" is used to refer to what in most RPGs is referred to as simply "Level." This is likely to distinguish it from the player's Alchemy Level, which is earned entirely through synthesis, rather than experience earned in battles.
