Judith Volltone is the protagonist of Atelier Judie: The Alchemist of Gramnad and a supporting character in Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists: Ateliers of the New World. She has also made an appearance in Atelier Questboard and Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy & the Liberator of Polar Night.

Judith is a young alchemist who specializes in making magical pills. Her parents owned their own magical pill shop, and left it for Judith after their death. Although she's an orphan, Judith has her pet, a parrot called Fink, as a companion and is never alone. Her father was more inclined towards research, while her mother had better practical alchemy skills. Judith's mother influenced her to pick a whip as her weapon, while her father taught her how to cook food using alchemy.[1]

She is a bit of a tomboy by nature, likes round things and dislikes anything bothersome. Judith is also known as "The Hero of Troubled Times" due to her tendency to somehow always get herself and others into trouble.

Judith grows into a great alchemist during her time travel to year 885, a time where alchemy has died out in Findenn Kingdom. However, one day she mysteriously disappears without a trace, perhaps hinting that she returned to her own time. As of the sequel Atelier Viorate: The Alchemist of Gramnad 2, she has not been seen for 20 years.

Role

Atelier Judie

Judith is the main character of the game and the character the player will control through the game.

A traveler requests that Judith make the item "Hourglass of the Dragon" which has the power to manipulate time. Just before she finishes the synthesis, a piece of Judith's hair falls into the cauldron which sends her 200 years into the future.

Judith's ultimate goal as an alchemist is to find her way back to her own original time. As she struggles to do so, she will make new friends and learn many lessons along the way.

Her parrot Fink is always accompanying her,

Depending on the, ending, Judith either stays in the future where her friends build an Atelier for her, or goes back to her original time where she continues working in her old workshop. Rastel Biheusen plays a notable role in both of these endings. In the PSP-exclusive ending, Sphere returns to her duty of ruling time in order to protect Judith and the world she lives in. However, it's unknown what time period Judith decided to live in.

Atelier Questboard

Judith once again travels in time, this time even further into the future as well as being transported to a different location (Arland). She then joins Rorona and the other alchemists in their quest to create the Philosopher's Stone (Ruby Prism). Her knowledge of an ancient writing system helps the team to further decipher the recipe. However, just like in her game of origin, the alchemists are faced with the issue that one of the materials required comes from a monster that has gone extinct. Logy is able to disassemble Judith's Dragon Hourglass and extract the material.

She shares stories from her time in Findenn, and reflects on that despite the hardships she was able to figure out a purpose in life through the experience. It is suggested that the recipe used for the Dragon Hourglass in Arland could be based off the modified version she made previously in Atelier Judie. Judith also learns that her friend Hermina became a teacher later in life, but worries that she might not be fit for the role due to her extreme actions and suspicious experiments. [2]

Atelier Resleriana

Judith travels various places in order to create the Dragon Hourglass, but struggles financially.[3]

Battle

Judith can be equipped with a staff or a whip in battle. Judith can also use items and skills in battle. Unlike previous protagonists, her only non-battle stat is Popularity, which in turn can also be influenced by the other party members. However, her Negotiation skill affects the prices of items in shops. The Angel Spirit skill can reliably fight Ghost enemies, making sure that the player can always handle these no matter who their other party members are.

In order to get the new third ending in the PSP version, the player will have to tackle the depths of Faktoa Temple with only Judith and Sphere. As Sphere is very frail and limited as a character the player may have to rely mostly, if not entirely, on Judith for damage output.

Trivia

  • In an interview, Yasuhiro Nakai from the Gust development team said that Judie's design was probably one of the quickest character design approvals he has seen, as the first illustration for the main character's design shown to Gust was approved[4].
  • As promotion for the Playstation Portable release of the game, a blog called Judie's Diary (ユーディーの日記) was created. It features blog entries written from Judith's perspective, accompanied with illustrations.
  • Unlike Sphere, Judith does not have a diary as she feels it's simply too troublesome. This implies that the promotional "Judie's Diary" might not be official to the game's story.
  • In the new events of the PSP version of Atelier Judie, Judith praises her own figure and also reveals her short skirt is for being fashionable, even if it means she easily gets cold.
  • Though it's shown to the player that a strand of hair caused Judith's time travel, Judith herself does not know that this was the reason.
  • Judith has the unusual characteristic of being a female alchemist protagonist with the option of using another weapon than a staff and being able to use more weapon types than only one. However, neither are a completely unique feature to Judith and other examples, such as Annie Eilenberg, exist within the series.
  • Her voice actress, Rie Kanda, has voiced several faeries later on throughout the Atelier series. Judie is the only human character she has done voice work for.
  • Judie and many other popular Atelier main characters are featured as character skins for the fighting game Dead or Alive 5 through a downloadable content collaboration done with Gust.[5]
  • In Judie's Diary, it's stated that Judith began using a whip as her weapon due to the influence of her mother, who often told her that girls should be elegant. However, this ended up only being a temporary measure, as people would often get the wrong impression, and Judie had to try to find other ways to defend herself from monsters.
