Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings (Japanese: リディー＆スールのアトリエ ～不思議な絵画の錬金術士～, Ridī ＆ Sūru no Atorie ～Fushigi na Kaiga no Renkinjutsushi～) is a 2017 JRPG for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows and PlayStation Vita.

It is a direct sequel to Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey, making it the third game of the Mysterious sub-series and the 19th main Atelier game. The theme of the game is "paintings".

Plot

The game takes place 4 years after the events of Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey.

The story starts with twin sisters Lydie Malen and Suelle Malen, the protagonists of the story. Lydie and Suelle live in a small alchemy atelier with their father, Roger Malen, in the city of Merveille, the capital of Adalet Kingdom. They wish to run the kingdom's top atelier someday, and while they are hardworking, they don't get a lot of business and survive on a bare minimum.

One day when synthesizing, they hear a voice from the basement their father has forbidden them from entering. Since their father isn’t home, Suelle convinces Lydie to go to there. There, they find a painting and are magically teleported to the world in its interior, where they find a woman (that they try to follow without success) and a lot of materials for alchemy.

When they finally discover the way back home, their father is at the basement. However, the girls ignore his complaints and run with excitement to the cauldron since the materials they gathered in the painting are still in their basket. They craft their best item up to the date, but despite wanting to return to the painting to gather more materials, their father forbids them to enter the basement again. That night, Lydie tells Suelle that the woman in the painting (who they could only see their back) looked a bit like their deceased mother.

Gameplay

The goal of the game is to raise the evaluation of the twins' atelier to the top level by taking on challenges in Merveille. When the Atelier Rank increases, the player gains access to new paintings to explore. Rare materials can be found inside the worlds of the paintings, which are used to improve Lydie and Suelle’s alchemy skills.

Unlike most examples of dual protagonists in the series, the player won't choose a single character of the two to control. Lydie and Suelle will advance the story together but the player can switch between them on screen.

The battle party consists of three pairs (six participating characters in total). The front character in each pair can be controlled through player input, while character in the rear will act when a follow-up condition is triggered. It's possible to synthesize in battle through the Battle Mix system, which uses possessed items to instantly craft a new item.

Characters

Atelier Lydie & Suelle features two female protagonists named Lydie Malen and Suelle Malen. The girls are twin sisters, are both 14 years old and run a small atelier in Merveille, the capital city of the Adalett Kingdom. Lydie is the older twin. She is gentle, a bit of an airhead and has a unique sense for art. Suelle is the younger twin. She is a cheerful, tomboy genius, and is afraid of insects.

In addition, another new characters as well as some returning protagonists from the previous Mysterious games - Sophie from Atelier Sophie and Liane, Firis and Ilmeria from Atelier Firis, respectively - also appear in this entry.

Lydie and Suelle Malen are designed by Yuugen and NOCO respectively. Suelle does not use a staff as her main weapon, and instead uses dual guns. Lydie follows tradition and uses a staff.

Playable Characters

Lydie Malen	One of the twins living in a penniless atelier. She is calm, kind and easily likable, but she also has a little airheaded side to her and likes to do things at her own pace. She is good at studying but not fond of exercise, and has a slightly unique taste in art.
Suelle Malen	One of the twins living in a penniless atelier. She is a tomboy with a cheerful personality, and can be rather mischievous. She is a prodigy and the type who doesn't worry about details. She is terrified of insects, and will throw a tantrum if one as much as even lands on her shoulder.
Sophie Neuenmuller	An alchemist who has been traveling for a very long time. As their senior, she helps Lydie and Suelle with some advice, yet she is not too dependable. Sophie's alchemy skill is great beyond doubt, and it has almost reached the extraordinary level of the one who taught her. She was the protagonist in Atelier Sophie, and also appeared in Atelier Firis.
Firis Mistlud	An alchemist with an immense love for traveling. It is easy to see from her looks that she has matured quite a lot on her journeys. Yet her friendly personality remains unchanged. She is a very skillful alchemist, and as soon as she opened her atelier in the city, she has become rather popular among citizens of Merveille.Firis has also learned how to use a bow from her sister, and she comes around to help Lydie and Suelle on a request from her long time friend, Ilmeria. She was the protagonist in Atelier Firis.
Mathias Ferrier Adalet	A man who can be found walking around Merveille. He is known for his frivolous and playful personality. However, he is much more reliable on the inside, and he volunteers to protect Lydie and Suelle. He is a member of a knight's order, and is rather skillful with his sword. He also has an older sister who completely holds him under her thumb.
Alt	A young man, with a genderless appearance, who has been quietly keeping his atelier in Merveille. It would seem his knowledge and skill in alchemy are rather high, and his atelier ranks among the top ones in the capital. He sports a cool personality and a sharp tongue, and prefers to keep his distance from the others.
Lucia Borthayre	She is the heiress of the most famous long-standing atelier in Merveille - Atelier Borthayre. She is both a childhood friend and a rival to the twins. She is known as a "flower on a high peak" for her attractive appearance and distant, but polite, attitude, but in fact she is very ambitious and can be rather mean. She's only playable as paid DLC.
Ilmeria Von Leinweber	An alchemist who was officially summoned by the state to open her atelier in the capital. Even though she was kind of forced into it, she ends up taking Lydie and Suelle under her wing and, moved by their enthusiasm, becomes their mentor. She is a very skillful alchemist, enough to compete with Firis, and the prideful but caring personality of hers still remains the same. She previously appeared in Atelier Firis, and is only playable as paid DLC.

Non-Playable Characters

Roger Malen	The father of Lydie and Suelle. He is not much of an alchemist, but has an extraordinary artistic talent. And as so many artists are, he sometimes is a little too airheaded and has a habit for wastefulness. This would be the reason why the twins had to take over the atelier and label him as "useless." Roger also has a "mad scientist" side to him, creating many new recipes, which usually end in explosions.
Honnete Malen	Her health was never too strong, and she has passed away from an illness three years ago. She was an energetic person, someone brought joy and sunlight into every room she entered. Her biggest wish was bringing peace and happiness to her family.
Plachta	She is an alchemists who travels together with Sophie, and she is both Sophie's mentor and best friend. Plachta is very diligent and collected most of the time, but can also be a little absentminded. She supports the others with her vast knowledge and makes sure they stay out of trouble. She previously appeared in Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis.
Liane Mistlud	She keeps a shop named "Lovely Firis" to sell the trophies of her hunts and gather the money to support her sister's atelier. She is an experienced hunter and usually is very calm, but when she gets to speak of her sister she may become rather intense. Her love towards her sister is forever growing. She previously appeared in Atelier Firis.
Mireille Ferrier Adalet	A woman who works at the Entrance Hall of the Royal Castle. In addition to her usual official duties, she has also taken on the supervision of the Atelier Ranking System. While she is a capable administrator, she is also the Crown Princess of Adalet and the older sister of Mathias.
Fritz Weissberg	A travelling puppeteer who made a stop in Merveille with his daughter Drossel. He strives for perfection, and has never stopped working to improve both his skill as a doll maker and the one of a swordsman. While usually he is a calm and intelligent man, his personality changes one hundred eighty degrees around dolls. He previously appeared in Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis.
Drossel Weissberg	Bright, noisy and energetic traveling scriptwriter. She is traveling with her father, Fritz, and they share their devotion to their dolls and the dream to create the best puppet theatre in the world. She has also already made her debut as a novel writer. She previously appeared in Atelier Firis.
Grace	A nun of the Church of Vegne. She is liked by the citizens, who all call her 'Sister Grace'. She is a devout believer and often organizes various events for everyone on weekends. While she looks very young, in fact she is over 50 years old, and seems to be troubled by something in her past...
Hagel	A big man who keeps the famous workshop in the city. The shine of his work only matches the shine of his head. He comes from a long line of blacksmiths, and is genuinely passionate about his trade. He's a big-hearted and jovial man, famous enough to even be featured in the capital's tourist guide book.
Fuoco	This girl lives among the lava falls of "The Great Cascades of Anfel". She has a pair of tiny wings on her back. Innocent and curious about everything, she has no knowledge about the world outside her painting.
Neige Chintreuil	The first alchemist to paint a "Mysterious Painting" with a world within it. While she is calm and mature, she actually quite disappointed in the adult world and wishes to remain as a child forever.
Corneria	A woman from the place called Kirchen Bell, who runs the famous "Corneria's Enterprise". She came to Merveille to bring in new merchandise and survey the market. Now she is eager to use the popularity of the Atelier Ranking System to spread her name and make some profit. She previously appeared in Atelier Sophie.
Pamela Ibis	A Sister from Kirchen Bell. Right now she lives in Church of Vegne together with Sister Grace. She was supposed to return to Kirchen Bell, but managed to take the wrong carriage and was taken back to Merveille. She doesn't seem to care much, however, and has become quite popular in the city, while she is trying to gather enough money for her journey home. She previously appeared in Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis.
Captain Backen	A glorious fictional pirate leader. He dwells in a cave on the bottom of the sea, inside "The Treasury at the Sea Bottom", protecting his treasures. His manners may seem high-handed at first, but actually he is quite a merry fellow.

Development

The game was announced during the Atelier 20th Anniversary Presentation, where it was said that it's part of the Mysterious series but is being made differently from the previous entries of the aforementioned series. NOCO and Yuugen both return as the illustrators for this entry, and designed one protagonist each.

The romanization of the game's title was originally "Atelier Lydie & Soeur", but it was changed to "Atelier Lydie & Suelle". The Japanese spelling of the title remained unchanged.
